Knowing Botox myths leading more people to treatments

ALTERNATIVE USES FOR BOTOX
Here are a few medical conditions Botox can treat or additional areas where it is being tested for its safety and effectiveness:
• Eye and neck muscle
  spasms
• Excessive sweating of
  the underarm, palms of
  hands, and soles of feet
• Reduction or elimination
  of headaches and
  migraines
• Enlarged prostate
• Bladder spasms

Despite being FDA approved for medical use since 1989, people still seem to have many questions about Botox. Even more problematic are the misconceptions concerning the drug.

According to Christopher Hubbell, M.D., a board certified dermatologist and dermasurgeon and founder and medical director of aJeuné Medical Spa and Acadiana Dermatology, the increasingly popular Botox Cosmetic, or Botulinum Toxin Type A, often is assumed to be dangerous because it is a protein harnessed from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Dr. Hubbell understands these concerns and had a similar response when the drug was first introduced. Since learning more about the drug, he is completely confident in its

and has been using it in his practice for the last decade.

Botox works by blocking nerves from stimulating muscles so they relax and no longer contract as readily.

"In cosmetic concerns, one of the reasons people have wrinkles is that the muscle is folding the skin," Hubbell said. "So, if you apply the Botox to the muscles that are causing the unwanted wrinkles, you can smooth out those wrinkles and give a much more natural, rested, refreshed look and still be expressive when used judiciously."

While Botox is considered safe when administered correctly, not all medications are appropriate for every patient, and those more about the drug, he is completely confident in its usage

with no bruising or discomfort during or after the procedure. She said the results are better each day, peaking after about a week.

Groner said the reason she decided to go in was mainly because it is such a quick and easy process.

"As you get older and start to look tired, it takes that tiredness away from you," she said. "It really makes you feel better about yourself, and I recommend it highly to anyone that is in a position to be able to do that for themselves."

Another concern many have is that Botox injections will make them look frozen or lose expressiveness. Hubbell said, typically, the main reason for such problems is use by untrained or unskilled providers. Hubbell recommends patients check each provider's credentials, experience and word of mouth feedback.

"The practical reality is with routine usage it is very, very rare to have any significant side effects," he said. AH

ON THE COVER:
Carolyn Groner started getting Botox treatments after learning the injections were quick and easy.

"There are only certain things that it can do," she said. "We're just softening the look, giving a more youthful appearance."

While the largest number of patients receiving treatments are middle-aged women, there are many others who are turning to Botox for help with their look. Hubbell finds more men now inquiring about the procedure, many concerned with brow creases making them appear upset or angry. There also are those who want to improve their look for professional reasons.

"Studies have been done that have shown that there are

advantages to looking your best in a competitive workforce," Hubbell said.

Cobb adds younger patients, many in their 20s, also are turning to Botox injections as a preventative measure.

"I have a couple of female athletes, runners, constantly squinting that were developing a really deep line between the brow," she said.

Carolyn Groner, manager of Mr. Lester's restaurant and a patient of Dr. Hubbell, has been pleased with her Botox experience. She said the injections are quick, taking only about 15 minutes,
