Hyperplasia
What is sebaceous hyperplasia?
Sebaceous hyperplasia is a disorder of the sebaceous glands
located within the skin. These glands secrete an oily substance
named sebum which lubricates the skin, protecting it from drying
out or becoming irritated. Sebacous glands are commonly associated
with hair follicles but they can also be found in hairless regions
of the skin.
What are the signs and symptoms of sebaceous hyperplasia?
Sebaceous hyperplasia forms one to five millimeter lesions on the
skin, mainly on the forehead, nose and cheeks. The lesions may be
cauliflower shaped. This condition generally affects middle-aged
to elderly adults. An acne-like condition is also a symptom of
this glandular disorder but differs from the type of acne seen in
adolescents and young adults. This condition is more of an
abnormally discolored patch, and often confused with acne. Acne
medications do little to nothing to cure the condition.
Dr. Hubbell Recommends:
PhotoDynamic Therapy
Hyfrecation (small electrical impulses which help to cauterize the
lesion.)
